Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has begun upgrading its traffic signal system, known as UTC-UX Fusion, integrating AI, predictive analytics, and digital twin technology. The system aims to reduce intersection congestion by 10% to 20% and support future smart transport initiatives.
The RTA’s new system, UTC-UX Fusion, leverages artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and digital twin simulations to optimize signal timings across Dubai’s key intersections. Project completion is scheduled for early 2026, reflecting RTA’s commitment to smart city initiatives that reduce congestion and journey times by up to 20%.
Hussain Al Banna, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, explains that this upgrade aligns with RTA’s vision of being a global leader in seamless and sustainable mobility. By improving traffic flow and giving priority to emergency vehicles and public transport, the system will elevate travel experiences for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport riders alike. The upgraded signals will dynamically adapt to real-time changes in traffic volume, adjusting signal phases to minimize delays.
Among the system’s core features is a predictive traffic analysis module that uses AI to anticipate upcoming traffic movements. Using digital twin technology, RTA can simulate various scenarios—such as peak-hour flows or event-based surges—and adjust signal timings accordingly, ensuring smoother traffic patterns. This real-time adaptation helps manage congestion and enhances overall network efficiency.
Additionally, data from future road sensors will feed into the UTC-UX Fusion system, allowing even more accurate signal timing adjustments. This advanced sensor integration paves the way for ongoing optimizations as Dubai’s road infrastructure expands.
The UTC-UX Fusion system also supports Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS/V2X), enabling communication between smart vehicles and traffic signals. Such connectivity can improve safety and traffic flow, coordinating signal phases with oncoming vehicle platoons or granting green waves to certain corridors. By fostering these innovations, RTA aims to reduce travel times, lessen congestion, and enhance Dubai’s positioning as a leader in intelligent mobility.
As the RTA deploys UTC-UX Fusion across major intersections, Dubai continues to invest in technologies that streamline movement, boost road safety, and prioritize environmental sustainability. With a focus on cutting-edge traffic management, the emirate is set to strengthen its reputation for pioneering solutions that address modern urban challenges and shape the future of global mobility.
