Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) introduced an advanced ‘Rail Bus,’ a solar-powered vehicle designed to transport 40 passengers at speeds of up to 100 km/h. Featured at the World Government Summit 2025, the new mode of transport aims to offer a connected, eco-friendly alternative to existing public transit systems.
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has revealed the ‘Rail Bus’, an innovative transit concept that aims to reshape urban mobility with a solar-powered, autonomous vehicle capable of carrying 40 passengers.
Displayed at the World Government Summit 2025, the Rail Bus features rows of seating, designated space for disabled passengers, and real-time travel updates. Each carriage can accommodate 22 seated passengers, plus standing room to reach a capacity of 40. With a maximum speed of 100 km/h, this advanced mode of transport promises to reduce travel times and improve convenience.
Solar-powered and self-driving, the Rail Bus aligns with Dubai’s broader vision for eco-friendly transport, supporting initiatives like the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy and Dubai’s Zero-Emissions Public Transport Strategy 2050. Proposed elevated tracks around the emirate would seamlessly connect these vehicles to existing metro lines and feeder bus routes, enhancing first- and last-mile solutions.
The RTA sees this project as a cornerstone of Dubai’s smart city ambitions, emphasizing innovation and sustainable growth. Although no official launch date has been confirmed, the Rail Bus could mark a significant leap in public transport, offering faster, greener, and more personalized options for residents and visitors alike.
During the World Government Summit, UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, alongside Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid, viewed the Rail Bus model, underlining the leadership’s interest in cutting-edge solutions that bolster Dubai’s global reputation for forward-thinking infrastructure.
